How it works

Apply each period to the value produced by the previous one

Compound growth is not the starting value plus the same fixed amount each time. Every period applies the percentage to the latest value, so the base changes as the sequence continues.

Formula

ending value = starting value × (1 + rate ÷ 100)periods

The expression in parentheses is the per-period multiplier. Raising it to the number of periods produces the total growth factor.

Worked example

  1. 1. Start with 1,000, a rate of 5% per period, and 3 periods.
  2. 2. Convert the rate into the per-period multiplier: 1 + (5 ÷ 100) = 1.05.
  3. 3. Raise 1.05 to the power of 3 to get the total growth factor 1.157625.
  4. 4. Multiply 1,000 by 1.157625 to get the ending value 1,157.625.
