How it works
Use one formula for both rises and falls
Percentage change measures the movement from the original value to the new value. If the result is positive, the value increased. If it is negative, the value decreased.
Percentage change formula
((new value - original value) ÷ original value) × 100
First find the raw change, then divide by the original value, then convert the result to a percentage.
Percentage change formula in Excel
=(new value - original value) / original value
With the original value in B2 and the new value in C2, enter =(C2-B2)/B2, then format the result as a percentage. See the complete Excel percentage formula guide.
Worked example
- 1. Start with 120 and 150.
- 2. Subtract 120 from 150 to get 30.
- 3. Divide 30 by 120 to get 0.25.
- 4. Multiply 0.25 by 100 to get a 25% change.
