How it works
Turn points into a percentage score
A grade percentage compares the points earned with the total points possible. The letter grade is a separate estimate based on the scale selected in the calculator.
Formula
grade percentage = (points earned ÷ points possible) × 100
Points possible must be greater than zero. Scores above the maximum are allowed so extra credit can produce a result over 100%.
Worked example
- 1. Start with 36 points earned out of 40 possible.
- 2. Divide 36 by 40 to get 0.9.
- 3. Multiply 0.9 by 100 to get 90%.
- 4. 90% maps to an estimated A on the standard 90/80/70/60 scale; you missed 4 points.
Letter-grade scales
- Standard A–F: A starts at 90%, B at 80%, C at 70%, and D at 60%.
- Plus/minus: uses common bands such as A+ at 97%, A at 93%, A− at 90%, and matching three-to-four-point bands below.
- Check your course: institutions and instructors may use different thresholds, weighting, curves, or pass requirements.
