How it works
Divide the part by the whole
The ratio tells you how much of the whole is represented by the part. Multiplying that ratio by 100 expresses it as a percentage.
Formula
(part ÷ whole) × 100
Divide X by Y, then multiply by 100. The whole cannot be zero.
Worked example
- 1. Start with 36 and 240.
- 2. Divide 36 by 240 to get 0.15.
- 3. Multiply 0.15 by 100.
- 4. 36 is 15% of 240.
