How it works
Add the tax on top of the base amount
A tax or VAT calculator starts with the pre-tax amount, works out the percentage tax in money, and then adds that tax amount to the base so you can see the final total due.
Formula
total = base amount + (tax % × base amount)
First calculate the tax amount from the tax rate, then add that tax amount to the base amount.
Worked example
- 1. Start with a base amount of 80.
- 2. Find 20% of 80 to get 16.
- 3. Add 16 to 80.
- 4. The final total is 96.
