How it works
Turn the tip percentage into a real total
A tip calculator starts with the bill amount, works out what the tip percentage is worth in money, and then adds that tip to the bill so you can see the full amount to pay.
Formula
total = bill + (tip % × bill)
First calculate the tip amount from the bill and tip percentage, then add that tip to the bill total. If you are splitting the bill, divide the final total by the number of people. Displayed payment amounts are rounded to two decimal places.
Worked example
- 1. Start with a bill of 80.
- 2. Find 15% of 80 to get 12.
- 3. Add 12 to 80 to get 92.
- 4. If 2 people split the bill, each pays 46.
